Dizzy Spell is a group exhibition inspired by a state of nausea, imbalance and re-calibration due to a sudden diagnosis of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). This occurrence and unsettling feeling made me think about the metaphorical, political and cultural power of vertigo and dissonance. The show gathers works that somehow manifest this to me, and are made by a group of artists I greatly admire. Presenting a range of media from photography, 16mm film and video through fragile threads of textile and cobwebs, sound vibrating in metal to the voice and storytelling, Dizzy Spell tries to embody the physical, singular experience of being out of kilter and in a process of re-orientation. Through the exhibition runs a vertiginous pull from delicate nerve-endings and trapped introspection into the larger world and its dizzying reflection.
